From Cash to Clicks: Raast Redefining Payments in Pakistan

Pakistan's latest stride towards digitalization comes in the form of Raast, the nation's first instant payment system. Raast is set to revolutionize financial transactions by enabling swift digital payments among individuals, businesses, and government entities. This system not only offers real-time settlement for small-value retail payments but also promotes accessibility and inclusivity across the financial industry, catering to both traditional banks and fin-tech players. The move aligns with the State Bank of Pakistan's (SBP) commitment to bolster a Digital Pakistan, targeting the inclusion of low-income groups into the formal economy. This shift not only documents economic activities but also holds the potential to enhance tax revenues and minimize the impact of currency fluctuations on essential commodities.

Governor of SBP highlighted that Raast's implementation stems from a comprehensive evaluation of existing payment habits and global best practices. The system is positioned as a catalyst for economic growth, particularly empowering small businesses and financially deprived individuals. The phased roll out strategy will commence with a bulk payment module encompassing digitalization of dividends, salaries, pensions, and governmental disbursements. Pakistan's low electronic transaction rate, partly due to limited awareness, trust, and accessibility issues, is expected to improve through Raast's advanced features. As opposed to the existing Real-Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS), tailored to corporate transactions, Raast is designed for efficient retail payment settlements.

Raast promises a gamut of features to reshape Pakistan's financial landscape. Operating on sector-wide interoperability, the system bridges various financial institutions through a central infrastructure, allowing cross-channel digital payments for customers of any bank. The cost-recovery model ensures affordability for users across different socio-economic backgrounds. Furthermore, Raast's technologically advanced framework facilitates the creation of user-friendly digital payment products and services, fostering innovation and adaptability. Security and reliability remain integral, with stringent transaction authorization and advanced fraud detection mechanisms in place.

In collaboration with Karandaaz, Raast represents a pivotal endeavor to enhance Pakistan's payment infrastructure, catalyzing digital financial services and promoting financial inclusion. The project's future phases will extend its benefits to micro and small businesses, offering streamlined payment solutions for suppliers and urgent obligations. The system will also facilitate Person-to-Person transactions, incorporating convenient features like payment requests and seamless initiation. Overall, Raast's launch signifies Pakistan's firm stride towards a more digitally integrated and inclusive financial ecosystem.
